traditions: what part does tradition play in religion?

psycho314t: it is good to do this with peers instead of adults
jello13091: It's good to do it with people who know, who have been given all this info. from God.
psycho314t: yeah
jello13091: and in this case, it does seem to be that peers and those who are possibly younger, know more and better things than adults do.
jello13091: I wonder if traditional values and beliefs, that have been passed down, is like a barrier. As in, that's what hold most people back. In fact, that is a big barrier
psycho314t: yeah, thats what i was about to say... we know more/better because we're more open to it. i think there are verses that speak against traditions...
jello13091: That wouldn't surprise me.
psycho314t: galations, philippians.. wonder if i can find what im thinking of
jello13091: Don't you just love how you know you've seen something before but you can't pin it down again?!
psycho314t: yeah, exactly.. i spent 6 years in bible drill studying the bible one random verse at a time, which did more bad than good in some cases, because there was no study in anything context-wise to help remember it later...
iwillgonow: And I'm back.
psycho314t: its in chapter 2 of some book. jacob, do u know what im talking about?
psycho314t: ".... traditions of men...."
psycho314t: grr...
iwillgonow: One of the apostles said that.
jello13091: huh, bad technique to teach. It's like throwing stuff at you and expecting you to catch it all at once even though you don't understand it or have a basis for it.
psycho314t: aha!! colossians 2:8
psycho314t: Colo:2:8: Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
psycho314t: tradition of men, singular, thats why i couldnt find it
jello13091: Man has been messing up the truth for a very long time....
iwillgonow: Mark:7:9: And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
iwillgonow: Mark:7:13: Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
iwillgonow: Tradition... It is like the word "pride," in that I cannot remember ever reading those words with a positive connotation.
iwillgonow: Who remembers reading something GOOD about traditions in the Bible?
psycho314t: not me
jello13091: DOn't the traditions just put more focus on the one who created or the one who does them?
iwillgonow: Traditions become an emphasis on themselves, as you both well know; how they're done with what people and at what place in what manner becomes important, if not the only thing, and their meaning is all but disregarded for the proceedure and procession.
psycho314t: there was something ellen white said about that... satan uses the traditions to take focus away from God
